Configuring the Camera

The camera settings have been optimized for the license plate capture application. These settings are appropriate for vehicle speeds up to 100 km/h (62 mph). The camera has been configured to the following default settings:

  • Exposure = 1/1000 s
  • Gain = 6 dB
  • Frame rate = 30 frames per second
  • Image quality = 6
  • HDSM SmartCodecâ„¢ is disabled
  • WDR is off to prevent image ghosting on moving objects

Shortening the exposure from 1/1000 s may result in the image becoming darker. An increase in gain may be required to compensate for the shorter exposure time. To avoid excessive noise, it is recommended to not exceed 24 dB gain.

The H4 LPC camera is setup to be sensitive only to IR light and not to visible light. As a result, in overcast weather conditions the live image may appear very dim or completely dark. This is the expected operation as the goal is to capture license plates which will appear bright under IR illumination as they are IR reflective.
